Solar Cooker Web Quest
Introduction:
Around the world energy can be saved by cooking using the sun. In many countries, stoves are being heated with wood. This destroys a vital resource, and requires energy to cut, chop and haul the wood as well. In this project you are going to attempt to make a solar cooker that will actually cook food.

Questions to think about:

  1. What are the best design features you want to include to create a good cooker?
  2. How does the cooker have to be adapted for cool to cold weather?
  3. How could you test your cooker?
  4. What kind of food could you easily cook in the cooker?
  5. How will using solar cookers help the environment?

The Task:

  • Research solar cooker designs. Complete questions and take notes. (20 points)
  • Design and draw a solar cooker that will heat a cup of water or cook a food of your choice. (20 points)
  • Build the cooker. (Completed model 30 points)
  • Test the cooker. (20 points for being supportive to the team)
  • Write a project summary. This should be 3 paragraphs and include the following information: Tell how well your design worked and why. Explain how you could change your design to make it better. Discuss the reasons and importance of building solar cookers for developing countries. (10 points)
  • The final end of the year project will be a “Cook Off” with the best designs from each hour, and each Tri Mark. This project is worth 100 points.
